நெய்தற்கலி (கலித்தொகை 119)

அகன் ஞாலம் விளக்கும் தன் பல் கதிர் வாயாகப்
பகல் நுங்கியது போலப் படு சுடர் கல் சேர,
இகல் மிகு நேமியான் நிறம் போல இருள் இவர,
நிலவுக் காண்பது போல அணி மதி ஏர்தர,
கண் பாயல் பெற்ற போல் கணைக் கால மலர் கூம்ப,

தம் புகழ் கேட்டார் போல் தலை சாய்த்து மரம் துஞ்ச,
முறுவல் கொள்பவை போல முகை அவிழ்பு புதல் நந்த,
சிறு வெதிர்ங் குழல் போலச் சுரும்பு இமிர்ந்து இம்மென,
பறவை தம் பார்ப்பு உள்ள, கறவை தம் பதிவயின்
கன்று அமர் விருப்பொடு மன்று நிறை புகுதர,

மா வதி சேர, மாலை வாள் கொள,
அந்தி அந்தணர் எதிர்கொள, அயர்ந்து
செந் தீச் செவ்அழல் தொடங்க வந்ததை
வால் இழை மகளிர் உயிர் பொதி அவிழ்க்கும்
காலை ஆவது அறியார்,

மாலை என்மனார், மயங்கியோரே.

The Cruelest Hour

The sun descends into the caverns of the
darkening western hills
drawing the day into his mouth of receding rays
with which he lit up heaven and earth in the morning
Darkness overhangs and waits
Like the black complexioned god of the deadly battle wheel.
As the beautiful moon begins to climb the vault of blue,
Lotus petals begin to close like eyelids drooping in slumber.
Trees with their bending boughs appear like worthy men
Who hang their heads in modesty on hearing praise.
Pearly buds unfold in the dark green foliage,
looking as though the bushes are grinning.
The humming notes of the honey bees flow to match
the music of the cowherds’ flutes.
The birds come flying to their roosts.
The cows are hurrying back from pasture, longing for their calves.
And all other animals reach their habitations.
The priests welcome the evening with the chanting of hymns.
Torch in hand, graceful maidens light the lamps in their homes.
Thus comes the twilight hour
which the naïve call evening.
But it is really the cruelest hour that has come
to torment lovesick girls in their loneliness.
